I am glad you are Here
Hi there! I'm Melissa Deaton, an LPCC specializing in trauma therapy. I'm passionate about helping adults heal from the impact of childhood developmental trauma, which can manifest in a variety of ways.
About Me
My journey towards becoming a counselor began unexpectedly in a college sociology class called "Social Problems." While pursuing pre-med, I realized that while medicine could save lives, counseling offered the profound opportunity to help individuals develop a life filled with meaning and purpose, despite the challenges they may face.
At the core of my approach lies a strong therapeutic relationship. I believe in creating a safe and non-judgmental space where you feel comfortable being yourself. I value authenticity, integrity, and genuine human connection. I view therapy as a collaborative process and work closely with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that aligns with your unique needs and goals.
I hold a Master's in Mental Health Counseling from Asbury Theological Seminary. My clinical expertise includes EMDR therapy (I am an EMDRIA Certified Therapist and Approved Consultant), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and psychosomatic interventions.
I understand that trauma manifests differently in each individual. I believe in viewing clients holistically, recognizing that their symptoms, while challenging, were once adaptive survival mechanisms. My focus is on helping you reduce shame, cultivate self-compassion, and develop new, more effective coping strategies. I assist clients in reprocessing trauma within a supportive and connected therapeutic relationship.
Outside of the office, I enjoy reading, listening to podcasts and audiobooks, and spending time with my family. I also enjoy quilting and try to find time for swimming. I have a wonderful mixed-breed dog named Bear who may occasionally join our sessions if you're comfortable with that.
